Jingle Bell Rocks!

Canada, United States / 94 min. / 2013 / English

It may sound eccentric, but it’s equally exhilarating. The catharsis of a Christmas carol collector that nurses his wounds through sleighs and Santa Claus. We enter into an obsessive subculture at the hands of the obsessed and their treasures (The Free Design, Bob Durough, Clarence Carter and Run DMC). Deep.

It might be exotic, but it's also exhilarating. We witness the catharsis, sweat and sting of a Christmas carol collector that nurses his wounds through reindeers, sleighs and Santa Claus. We dive into an obsessive subculture of somewhat damaged, and sometimes bashful (half-jesting) gents through their pathological fixation. But it's a voyage of lacerations, illuminations and cleansing. For all these collectors, abandoned kids, these Christmas ditties are a soothing balm: star and director Mitchell Kezin, son of an absent father and innocent victim of divorce, decide that Christmas is lame until they hear Miles Davis' "Blue Christmas". The film unfolds in various forms: a hymn to the magic and redeeming power of music; an ode to familiarity, ritual and tradition; and a defender of all those peculiar, ironic or prim yuletide songs.. We meet plenty of sound sickos like Bill Adler (publicist for Def Jam), but also the songs, records and artists that cured them. The line-up is heart stopping: The Free Design, Bob Durough, Clarence Carter and Run DMC? Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low, and Elvez? Jingle Bell Rocks is as lovable as Christmas, but much more surprising.

Mitchell Kezin is the Canadian director and actor (and incurable collector) that plays the leading role in Jingle Bell Rocks! His previous piece was the short fiction film Celluloid Souls (1997).
