Gruff Rhys (of Super Furry Animals) embarks on the trail of John Evans, an ancestor of his that left Wales in 1792 in search of a Native American tribe that – supposedly – spoke Welsh. Rhys retraces his adventure along the length and breadth of the American interior through gags, fantasy, PowerPoints and pop. This is a legend that transforms into a series of chats-over-music and winds up mutating into a book, app and film. It’s one of those great cryptic sagas. Rhys recounts it with gargantuan humor, passion and a cute cuddly toy: John Evans. It’s an investigative tour (Rhys discovers things as he moves down the Mississippi) where the star, public and In-Edit spectator all learn a thing or two en route. And it’s so entertaining and joyous. You’ve gotta love Gruff Rhys, defending minority cultures and languages, chatting with the last Native American that still speaks Mandan (nothing like Welsh, but equally baffling). And you gotta love John Evans, who died aged 29, after enduring malaria, prison, and misunderstanding… and even had to become a Spanish citizen to cross a border. You’ve gotta love his cuddly toy, who we even see getting arrested (and pixelated) in St. Louis. And the film includes songs by Rhys and Super Furry Animals! A gem. For real.

Dylan Goch is a director whom one naturally associates with Gruff Rhys. His previous documentary Separado! (2010) also starred the Welsh musician and also waxed lyrical about the search for an ancestor, in this case, in Patagonia.
