Matthew Stoneman (“Mateo”) is the Mariachi Gringo. A specky Yankee pussy that earns a crust strumming Cuban music in bars. A sincere examination of overflowing otherness: prison, prostitution, Cuba, love of music and a tremendous star.

We may have seen Japanese flamenco singers and Hasidic rappers but we still haven't come across a redheaded sonero. Matthew Stoneman ("Mateo") is nicknamed the Gringo Mariachi. Little more than a fifty-something-year-old specky ginger Yankee that earns a crust strumming Cuban music in bars. The story could focus solely on the extravagant – there's no shortage of shocking details – but Mateo also delves into the alienation, solitude and otherness of a character that raises questions: Where did Mateo come from? Does he have family? How does he live? These and many other conundrums are answered in the film – a sincere examination of misfits that have it all that mesmerizes the viewer: prison, prostitution, Cuba, love of music and a tremendous protagonist that mixes the innocent with the depraved and the lovable with the detestable. Mateo has the eyes of a deviant, but feels genuine affection for those around him. Mateo doesn't have old friends, but he knows half of Cuba. A family adopts him and tolerate his addiction for hookers. Mateo spends all his money on sublime recordings that virtually no one will listen to, and invests the rest in brothels. There is no conclusion, there are no excuses and no honey buns: just the portrait of a pale face singing Boleros. And it will touch your bones.

Aaron Naar is a filmmaker based in Los Angeles that has worked for Planet.Move and directed short documentaries like The Men of the Lake. Mateo is his first feature-length film.
