How to get out of the cage

Netherlands / 57 min. / 2012 / English

If you blink, you’ll miss an aphorism. The most lucid mind in advanced music and guru of silence talks here to Scheffer about James Joyce, the I Ching, Duchamp, Zen stories and of how his best friends are those he doesn’t understand. The polar opposite of simple.

If you blink, you'll miss an aphorism. The most lucid mind in advanced music and the Pope of silence, talks to the #1 fan of his work, Frank Scheffer. Scheffer appears incapable of extrapolating himself from a figure that has long guided his work and his spirit: he met Cage in 1982 (which changed his life forever), he made a documentary about him in 1987 (Time is Music) and in How To Get Out of The Cage, he spends an entire year revisiting that deep cut. There's no room for distractions: Cage doesn't chew the fat or spout clichés about meteorology. Everything Cage reveals, absolutely everything, has substance and resonance. Each declaration is a philosophy lesson; each action a commandment to follow. Cage speaks here about the turbines of his art, one by one. On Duchamp ("a piece isn't created by the artist, but the listener"), on the I Ching ("ideas come to me by chance operations"). Of being a follower of Thoreau ("Simplify. Simplify. Simplify.") and on shifting towards James Joyce ("the opposite of simplification"). And of course, he also muses over silence and sound ("I loved sounds, although I didn't have an ear for harmony. But not all sounds have harmony. Like noises, for example"). An omnipotent Cage. Immense and vast, just like his music.
