160 metros, una historia del rock en Bizkaia

Spain / 66 min. / 2014 / Spanish, Basque

The distance between the two sides of Bilbao river marks two different planets, and the left doesn’t bask in the sun. Eskorbuto and Zarama vs. the Getxo Sound. A film that speaks of social classes and cultural chasms, but also of urbanism, modernization and history.

Everything comes down to the great trench, like in Asterix and The Great Divide. 160 meters and a boatload of hectoliters separate the banks of the Bilbao river. Each side of it houses two different planets, and the left side doesn't bask in the sun. This Bizkaian odyssey exudes rock'n'roll, but also urbanism, sanitation, social classes and politics. You are what you eat: on the left bank, blast furnaces and scuffles with the police were daily bread and heroin was omnipresent: from there, Zarama and Eskorbuto emerged, spurred by a view of the sewers. On the right side, the Getxo Sound groups (El Inquilino Comunista, Los Bichos, Cancer Moon...) sang in English and idolized Pavement and The Pixies. From the Guggenheim to Eskorbuto. Is the distance too chasmic? Assembled anecdotes give us a vague idea: Los Clavos (right side) refused to open for Mierda (left side) and today declare: "We didn't want to be the opener for shit". Some would say that nobody could wade between these shores, but a member of Los Clavos rejects that idea: "I don't believe that 160 meters means you can't live the life you want." This documentary is the bridge: it approaches the two factions and puts them in context, listening to each voice.
