Varese: the one all alone

Powerful images of nature invite us into this film-essay that translates Varese into cinematographic language, Acolytes and disciples like Riccardo Chailly, Pierre Boulez and Chou Wen-Chung destroy clichés to reveal this marvellous, misunderstood visionary.

Powerful images of nature draw us in to a film-essay that translates Varèse into film language. This poetic riddle – unsolvable at first glance – suddenly illuminates, slicing through the shadows. John Cage and Morton Feldman begin measuring the shadow of the giant, and the intricate nature of his work, winding up admitting that for the musicians of New York, nobody has been more important because "nobody understood what he did". How do we decipher this colossal artist with beetling brows, bushy hair, towering height and Godzilla's footprints? Acolytes and disciples sprinkle remnants of his life and miracles, and the puzzle falls into place while the typical formula falls to pieces. Chou Wen-Chung, his first disciple and student highlights his boss and mentor's surreptitious sense of humor, while labeling him a "traditionalist" whose ideas were misunderstood. Pierre Boulez kyboshes the theory of the mad scientist and irreverent barbarian that merely wanted to apply science to music ("they didn't see the respect he felt for his heritage and for that of others"). The final frame, which includes his family tree and flashes of his relatives, is like a striking panoramic photo of a great canyon. Big, very big... so big that it instills vertigo.
