A Mahler festival in 1995 celebrates the complete cycle of symphonies by the Austrian composer. Illustrious conductors (Claudio Abbado, Simon Rattle, Riccardo Chailly...) examine the maestro’s theatricality, humour… and perpetual sadness. And how to perform it.

In 1920, the first festival took place to celebrate the music of the Austrian composer: 16 days, with all the symphonies and cycles united for the first time in an unbreakable bundle. 75 years later, in 1995, a handful of orchestras reunited to repeat the gesture. Five illustrious guest directors speak of their relationship with Mahler, with the affection and sweetness of a first kiss: Claudio Abbado (who saw a street funeral in Vienna and said "now I understand Mahler"), Simon Rattle (who heard Mahler at ten years of age and felt "as if they had ripped out my insides", Riccardo Chailly (whose father left him to his own devices at 9 years of age at a Mahler concert), Riccardo Muti and Bernard Haitink. At their hands, we discover the theatricality, at times intangible humor, and perpetual sadness of the maestro – and how to perform it. And it's essential to understand this incurable melancholy, to detect the humor, to reinterpret it as it deserves. The fantastic five lead the way, rebuking, whispering, flaying and bolstering their orchestras with a noble aim: Symphony to symphony they capture Mahler's "tortured talent", his personal tragedy, his marriage, his inferiority complex, his fighting spirit. A film that's as monumental and grandiose as his sound.
