Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of

Director Stephen Kijak
United Kingdom, United States / 106 min. / 2015 / English

“What do you do when you’re an adult in a boy band?” Valid question to ask the biggest pop group on the planet from 1999 and 2002.  This film emotionally probes the early days and maturing (and resulting conflicts) of these teen idols, through thieving managers, squabbles and stardom, right up to the 20th anniversary in London in 2012.

They were like Pinocchio: starting out manufactured, but becoming flesh and blood. Eh: "What do you do when you're an adult in a boy band?" Legitimate question to ask the biggest (and most lucrative) pop group on the planet from 1999 to 2002. Tempus fugit, and we discover the five-piece group in London, in 2012, a pivotal moment in their existence (their 20th anniversary), which encompasses a backwards glance and the return to the holy places. The band embarks on a process of remembrance, through all the towns, institutes and stages, and it all ends in tears. Tears of joy, or rage, and also of amazement and sheer sorrow. We discover Lou Pearlman, the businessman that selected and shaped them, and then proceeded to viciously swindle them (he stirs up mixed feelings). We emotionally explore the early days and maturity (and accumulating conflicts) of these teen idols through their spats and friendship, openhearted actions and money that flooded in, plus all the hits, grief and addictions. Being prefabricated ain't to say that shit don't hurt.
