Mavis!

Director Jessica Edwards
United States / 81 min. / 2015 / English

With an exclamation mark. For her status, but also for her booming voice. A 75 year old dame, great lady of gospel that refuses to get off the stage, talks about her life with the Staple Singers (her entire family), hits, civil rights and that “cute” guy called Dylan. Jeff Tweedy, Chuck D and Bob himself still want to ask for her hand.

With a resounding exclamation mark. For her magnitude and talent, but also for that boomin' voice that carried her far and beyond the Church. Mavis Staples: a 75-year old force of nature that refused to get off the stage. You'll see here how Mavis was responsible for "whipping the worshippers into a frenzy"; how the Staple Singers joined forces with the folk congregation (the family covered "Blowin' in the Wind"; and Dylan, that "cute" guy professed that he wanted to marry her); how they played at white festivals, and plunged into pop ("because the gospel is nothing but the truth and we sing the truth"); how they became core elements in the Black Movement and participated in Wattstax; and even had a "racy" hit ("Let's do it Again"); how Mavis collaborated with The Band, Prince, and finally received a Grammy. How she suffered her mishaps, but today plays for ever-ageing audiences and that her VOICE continues to be gale force (as you'll verify when she performs some of her hits). Jeff Tweedy, Chuck D, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Cropper and Dylan raise their hands in praise.
