Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami

Director Sophie Fiennes
Ireland, United Kingdom / 115 min. / 2017 / English

Intimate and unconventional portrait of Grace Jones as a quintessential artist and free spirit – diva, actress, model, businesswoman, daughter, mother, hedonist and indomitable force of nature – that also includes electrifying live performances.

For this project, director Sophie Fiennes enjoyed full access to Grace Jones’ life, be it during work trips, at family events or in the privacy of a hotel room, and took the opportunity to draw a portrait at point-blank range that captures the many facets of the Jamaican diva. Here, we find Jones eating fried fish in Kingston with her family, throwing a wobbly at her trusted bassist on the phone, humming happily as she dresses oysters in the recording studio or asking a Parisian taxi driver where the hell the party is at. And this series of scenes make up a multi-faceted depiction of a shameless, talkative, direct, genuine, cocky and magnetic person who acquires titanic dimensions when she gets up on stage.
