Andrea Motis: la trompeta silenciosa

Director Ramon Tort
Spain / 81 min. / 2018 / Català

Intimate portrait of the acclaimed jazz trumpeter, saxophonist and jazz singer. Or, how a (former) child prodigy without no interest in fame struggles to manage her career without haste, without pause and while enjoying the ride.

At the age of 14, Andrea Motis, together with her father and mentor, the saxophonist Joan Chamorro, decided to decline a tempting offer from Blue Note, the most famous of all specialized jazz labels. It would not be the last time she would face a decision of such magnitude. The reason: "not to force something that was still growing". The idea of ??maturing as a person and as an artist at the rhythm that feels right, and of prioritizing learning the craft over shallow showbiz and hurried joy is the central axis of a documentary that follows the Barcelona trumpeter and singer on tour around half the world and embarking on educational projects. From large auditoriums in New York and Tokyo to collaborate with the Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra or to give classes at a children's camp in Chile. Halfway between intimate interview and the travel diary, Motis reflects on her connection with the trumpet, which allowed her to channel her frustrations from a very young age, and of the difficulty and the vital need to focus her career with discretion and humility, fleeing emergencies, demands and siren songs, aware that she is still looking for what can be special, with the peace of mind that at any moment she can shake it all off and move on.
