A Band Called Death

Director Mark Covino, Jeff Howlett
United States / 96 min. / 2012 / English

It don’t get no stranger than this: a band of young black guys with a morbid name, playing punk in '70's Detroit. A secret saga of race, stubbornness, failure and rebirth, cheered on by Henry Rollins, Alice Cooper, Jello Biafra, Elijah Wood, and many more.

They don't come no stranger than this: a band of young black guys with a morbid name playing punk rock in 70's Detroit. And it's like Henry Rollins says: their story is like the trailer to a film. But A Band Called Death is real, and Death existed, as far out as it may seem. The latter-day testimony of the Hackney brothers (Dennis and Bobby being the survivors, as David died) leads us through this bizarre band's implausible journey. It speaks of race, family and sticking together, about revelations ("This is the music we have to play" – they said, after seeing The Who), about ridicule nestled in the bosom of the community, and about how, obstinately, the more they were mocked, the louder they played. From there, we see courage, racism (let's face it: they were called DEATH and they were black), of stubbornness, self-publishing (they released their first single) and their final turning into spiritual rock and reggae bands. But in 2008, they were rediscovered by a new generation, their first album reappeared (after 35 years), their kids set up a punk tribute band to Death and nobody would have guessed it, but they ended up getting back together. Throughout the film, Henry Rollins, Alice Cooper, Jello Biafra, Elijah Wood, ?uestlove and others give raucous kudos.

Mark Christopher Covino and Jeff Howlett are the two directors of this film. They have experience in all aspects of the filmmaking process (they've even worked in special effects). This is their first feature-length documentary.
