Every Everything: the music, life & times of Grant Hart

United States / 93 min. / 2013 / English

The only star and voice of this film, Hüsker Dü’s lucid yet damaged drummer-singer, soberly analyses the tripartite while rummaging around its soul. Vulnerability, hatred and addiction. A self-examination with big ideas and big noise.

The one and only star and singing voice of this film, Grant Hart, the lucid yet damaged drummer-vocalist of Hüsker Dü, soberly analyses the great American punk tripartite of the '80s while rummaging around in its soul. Never before has this sullen and moody artist immersed himself this way in the labyrinthine memorial of the band, with all its feuds, mysteries and symbols. Every Everything is the perfect title: it all comes out, and what's more, it's told by an articulate, alienated and ill-tempered chronicler. Hart doesn't beat about the bush while he simulates (a macabre detail) walking around the house that recently burnt down. This is a self-examination with ideas and big noise – "Diane", "It's not funny anymore", "2541", Zen Arcade ("the most punk thing was to do the most hippy thing") – brimming with vulnerability, wide-ranging hatred (those that proclaim the Hüsker Dü influence to be "a disguise", Smashing Pumpkins, the "democratization" of the art...) and terrible addiction. Hart opens his deep dark soul and in doing so, fractures ours. When the film finishes you don't know whether to say you like this guy but you can at least say that you know him inside out. And that only happens with the best documentaries.
