This Ain't No Mouse Music!

Director Chris Simon, Maureen Gosling
United States / 91 min. / 2013 / English

Arhoolie Records, the great southern label, and its founder, the peculiar Chris Strachwitz. Love of records, forgotten sounds and The South. A major player that would change the future of rock, as affirmed by Ry Cooder, Richard Thompson and Bonnie Raitt, among others.

Directed by two assistants to the renowned Les Blank (who we homage this year at Beefeater In-Edit), This Ain't No Mouse Music! is the Arhoolie Records romance. A dance with the great southern label and even more than that, a profile of its founder, the shy, eccentric and frenzied enthusiast, Chris Strachwitz: immigrant from Silesia and reborn believer in music "with balls" (blues, cajun, zydeco, norteño...), lover of the record-making process, and fervent vinyl collector. As the film unravels, a brutally honest guy emerges: despite having built his career recording black music, he isn't afraid to confess that "when I was younger, I wasn't very progressive" and that his work doesn't owe itself to "cultural preservation. I threw myself into it like a pig into a pond". This film is full of juicy anecdotes, blues chronicles and love of records as a physical format. Strachwitz hates everything he doesn't like, and although his label would change the future of rock ("without country blues, there would be no Cream"), as Ry Cooder, Richard Thompson and Bonnie Raitt, among others testify... its parting gesture reminds us that this immense labor was done for only one good reason: pure passion.
