Since the last Beefeater In-Edit, three other In-Edits have taken place around the World (Chile, Brazil and Germany). The winning documentaries in their respective national sections are screened in a special, free session.

18:00h

Music From the Moon

Carsten Christochowitz, Christian Hund, Uwe Wältring / Germany / 2009 / VOSI

A travelling puppeteers show (Hypno Theatre) visits Iceland and Greenland with its art. Their voyage echoes music (with Sigur Ros, Mum and Emiliana Torrini) but also cookery, education, beliefs and Nordic character. Intimate sounds and postcard-perfect landscapes.

Presentation with the three directors

20:00h

Electrodomésticos: el frío misterio

Sergio Castro / Chile / 2009 / VOSI

The saga of Santiago de Chile's most unusual (and immortal) band, from 1982 – under dictatorship – until today, transformed into an elegant commentary on community, secrecy and innovation. The coldest and most modern trio of Chilean new wave.

Presentation with Sergio Castro

22:30h

Filhos de Jôao, O admirável mundo Novo Baiano

Henrique Dantas / Brazil / 2009 / VOSE

The evangelism of the emblematic group, Novos Baianos. Hedonist freaks, football and rock addicts, the NB's would become the most successful group in Tropicalism. Original footage and witnesses like Tom Zé chime in to create a moving and passionate narrative.

Presentation with Henrique Dantas

As we are also a little demonic, we’re repeating our London’s Backstage All Night Marathon on the night of October 31st. Three epic concerts filmed by Murray Lerner at the Isle of Wight will headline.

24:15h

Leonard Cohen: Live at the Isle of Wight

Murray Lerner - USA – 2009 – 66'

A mystical, longhaired Leonard Cohen stars in a new Lerner rehash of the Isle of Wight 1970 universe. Further gone than his audience, the poet that loved women unfolds his charms and freezes anarchy in a whisper. Be afraid.

01:45h

Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live at The Isle of Wight

Murray Lerner - USA – 2002 – 118'

The Apocalypse Now-like chaos of the Isle of Wight 1970 is the rugged landscape before which the great, black guitar-hero burns in his concert on August 31st, at 2am. From "God Save the Queen" to "Purple Haze" in 118 unforgettable minutes of acid rock engulfed in flames.

04:10h

Listening to You: The Who at The Isle of Wight Festival

Murray Lerner - UK – 1970 – 86'

A thousand thrashes and two thousand guitar slashes. 85 minutes of the world's greatest group let rip against everything. Classics, Tommy, rock'n'roll and jazz standards ("Young Man Blues") and even an unreleased number ("Water"). Fringes to the wind and drums shredded to ribbons. Unforgettable, dear friends.

If there were a Mount Rushmore of American musical documentaries, Murray Lerner’s face would figure among those of Albert Maysles, D.A. Pennebaker and Martin Scorsese. His capacity to furnish us with some of the most electrifying, visionary and inspiring moments in popular music is outstanding. And the list, heartstopping: Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Who, The Doors, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix... And, without avoiding the contexts and conjunctures in which they took place: the creation of a new musical culture, aesthetic, and political, surrounding the Newport Festival in Festival!, the conflict between art and money, music and business  in Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Festival, or the dark – and delirious – side of the Chinese cultural revolution in  From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China. In a moment of particular exacerbation with the visual culture, it becomes especially interesting to discover the role that avant-garde poetry plays in his conception of the documentary, or how directing has led him to write, film and edit almost all his films, not just for the DIY element, but moreover for the command of materials typical of any creator worth their salt.

In 2009, Fermín Muguruza made Checkpoint Rock. Canciones desde Palestina, a documentary that shortly after its premiere, earned him a passionate assignment from Al Jazeera: to document the Arab world in eight monographic documentaries. From Morocco to Lebanon, from Egypt to Yemen, via Tunisia or Sudan. The result is Next Music Station, an exploration of the traditional and emerging sounds, rhythms and contexts of the Arab world. Almost a year of shooting and over eighty interviews reveal the extraordinary diversity, the richness of the cultural legacy and the vitality of its musicians, which, in some cases, draw us into its atmosphere and the conflicts these countries experienced before the Arab Spring. Following a screening of the documentaries on Wednesday November 2nd and Thursday 3rd, Muguruza will chat about the project with Montaser Marai, producer of the series for Al Jazeera, in an encounter chaired by Lidia Martorell.

TUNISIA

Fermín Muguruza / Spain, Qatar / 2011 / 52’

The extraordinary Tunisian musical legacy through the great performers of traditional music, styles like Malouf, Taraab chants and a new generation that perceives its music and their roles as musicians in political terms.

EGYPT

Fermín Muguruza / Spain, Qatar / 2011 / 100’

The sonic landscape of the Arab cultural giant, from Aswan to Luxor and Asiut, from Cairo to Port Said: from its rich tradition of chanting and improvisation to hip hop and rock, passing through rhythms with flamenco roots, Sufi mysticism, Zar and Dervish dances.

17:00h. TUNISIA -- 52'

We knew about Michael Nyman’s love affair with film, through his collaborations with Peter Greenaway (The Draughtsman’s Contract; The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover), Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland, Tristram Shandy: a Cock and Bull Story) and Jane Champion (The Piano). Less well known is his role as filmmaker, as a man glued to his camera. He reveals this side to us today in this encounter, in which we see fragments of Cine Opera and Nyman with a Movie Camera, his two documentaries to date. The first takes its name from a run-down cinema in Mexico City, it’s a collection of short pieces that takes the form of a visual diary, alternating between spontaneity and the footnote at the base of the page, fruit of his gallivanting around half way around the world, and all set to music by the man himself. Experimentation and the “a day in the life of” articulate the second, a recreation of the classic by Dziga Vértov, inventor of cine-eye and Nyman’s director fetish. An opportunity to enter the world of this prolific composer and pianist, musicologist and orchestra director, through his own words and his own eyes.

And encounter with MICHAEL NYMAN and projections of CINE OPERA and NYMAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA. Chaired by: MANUEL HUERGA.

We enter the kitchen of El rosari de l'aurora, a journey through the musical imaginary and ups and downs of Adrià Puntí, one of the most unique and inimitable creators of Catalan pop. A production as frenetic and surreal as its star, which Xavier Puig, Raimon Fransoy and Marc Ruiz began embracing more than three years ago, and which today divulges the ins and outs and delicious unseen footage. As production is in full swing, its dossier reveals all the habitual – and essential – letters of support for the project to seek funding, this lifestage of every documentary that transforms it, once completed, into a miracle, and in most cases, into an odyssey. Out of all of them, we particularly dig one by Quimi Portet, in which he highlights what he calls the “inescapable” importance of this documentary “its poetic temple, linguistic brilliance and exquisite musical inspiration make (from Punti’s work), an essential testament to our contemporary culture, and constitute a powerful antidote against the boredom that our secular political sadness and the precariousness of our cultural activity project on the lyrical segregations of this country.”

An encounter with XAVIER PUIG, RAIMÓN FRANSOY and MARC RUÍZ and projections.

Paloma Concejero claims that the first time she heard the recordings of the conversations between Antonio and Bosco Ussía, author of the singer’s biography, she felt “so excited it sent shivers up my spine”. This documentary provides a similar sensation, earning its title from the chorus of the song “Persiguiendo sombras”, with the subtitle “Vega como no lo has visto antes”. If the recordings in question were the first brick of this building, the second consisted of throwing the Manichaeism of catastrophe, the tortured legend that surrounds Vega, overboard, with the intention of revealing the lesser-known and more unusual aspects of his personality. As such, it relies on the complicity of his family and also his adopted families: his musicians and those who gave him shelter and hospitality at some moment of his life. Abundant unseen footage – recordings in Super 8, graphic testimonies and photos from his personal archives, oh and incursions into the places that defined and inspired his songs complete this ambitious portrait of one of the greatest figures in Spanish pop.

Encounter with the director PALOMA CONCEJERO, the producer JAIME DE LA PUENTE and CARLOS VEGA and projections.

"There's a band in town. We've arrived, we're here and we're Los Cicatriz." Jorge Tur responded to the challenge of this extraordinary short with a particular tour de force: to shoot and edit a documentary diary on Vitoria in a mere three days. He chose one of its most emblematic groups, the defunct Cicatriz, famous '80s punk band and authentic hurricane in their day, whose trail is reconstructed through encounters with those who knew them and those who ask them to sing their songs. The result is a moving tale of a generation, time and city that have disappeared.

By chance, Beefeater In-Edit and Barcelona start with the same letter. Not by chance, from the get-go one of our main interests has been reflecting the pulse of Barcelonese and Catalan music through documentaries. This means maximizing the moments in which the vitality and vigor of new generations of musicians awaken the support of new audiences.

As festival followers have already noticed, memory has an important role at Beefeater In-Edit, given that in life, like in art, we're the result of what others were before us. That's why, this year, for the eighth edition of the festival, we're proud to include a documentary like "Barcelona era una fiesta (Underground 1970-1983)" to inaugurate a new Beefeater In-Edit.

With this documentary, we want to express that we form part of a tradition, an urban tradition that vitally and creatively exploded not so long ago. We can trace the lines of what we are today from what we were in the not so distant past, within the context of a city that rewrites itself everyday, just like Barcelona itself. And we want to stick around and keep re-writing it. A warm welcome to you all.

We are delighted to welcome Morrosko Vila-San-Juan, director of the documentary, and some of those who star in it to the inauguration.

Julien Temple is the homaged director of this edition of the festival. He's the author of quintessential titles like The Filth and The Fury about the Sex Pistols, Joe Strummer. The Future is Unwritten about the singer from The Clash, and Oil City Confidential about Dr. Feelgood, a kind of trilogy of the punk years and of the England in which they were born. Then came modern day portraits of Paul Weller and The Kinks, or cities like Detroit or London –the phantasmagorical Requiem for Detroit; and the most recent London, The Modern Babylon. This unmistakably British director, maestro of collage and filmmaker by the grace of de Jean Vigo, gives a masterclass today.

Archive images and cranky concerts, musical peaks and troughs, devoted fans and interviews with elders, recognition of I was there and predilection for I'd have given my right arm to be there... It's clear that the music documentary has its own rules, and each one is different. A generation touched by the experimental and the televised, by poetic justice and parody in unequal doses. Indescribable flag-bearers of post-patriotic humour, Venga Monjas give a conference on how to make the ideal music documentary. What to do and what not, in a session filled with surprises.

Visual Phonic presents an audio-visual piece based on the essence of the seventh art, silent movies, and on the live creation of a new soundtrack for each film, using exclusively vinyl records. An interesting symbiosis is formed from the visual and expressive power of the silent film, and the strength of the music to accompany the images and evoke atmospheres and emotions.

A concept based on classic silent films, with a musical soundtrack selected especially for each film by an expert DJ, from among his vast record collection and played live on two turntables and a mixing desk, in the search for new creative performances.

The Visual Phonic soundtracks are musical expressions created especially and exclusively for a silent film, according to the artistic criteria of each DJ involved. They are structured and ordered like sonic phrases that strengthen the narrative thread of films in this era prior to sound, or which can even offer new interpretations and meanings.

IN-EDIT Fast Forward is a new course of action for IN-EDIT, a new programme that will run in parallel with the Festival, but with its own characteristics. In-Edit Fast Forward's objective is to become the festival's mid-term professional area, although its unique features mean it can't exclusively be branded as such.

IN-EDIT Fast Forward focuses on presenting tech-based projects that directly or indirectly affect the audiovisual and musical worlds, and which are in a development phase that is optimal for presentation to the general public in Barcelona (many of these projects are in "Beta" phase).

In-Edit FFWD is not exactly a parallel activity. So we recommend you to read all the info here.

All songs and images are stimuli looking for a response from whomever is listening or watching. At Beefeater In-Edit we’ve planned our chat with Don Letts like this: we’ll play him songs and images that he doesn’t know about in advance (but which are linked to his career), and he’ll respond with anecdotes, reflections and his habitual salt-shaker based on what he sees or hears.

We get into the kitchen of El dolor de la bellesa, the latest project by Raimón Fransoy, Xavier Puig and Marc Ruiz –also authors of the unorthodox Adrià Puntí-, for an ultra personal reflection on tradition, roots and memory that revolves around an extraordinary meeting, that of Roger Mas with the Cobla Sant Jordi Ciutat of Barcelona. We're talking about an unusual production championed by the music of the city of Solsona, and for which he unleashes his inner crooner, accompanied by a cobla, (a group of traditional musicians) whose sound was reinvented while he reinterpreted home-grown and more distant songs: from Fabrizio de André to Ary Barroso from Mikel Laboa to Barbara, from Jacint Vedaguer to La bien pagá.

Carles Prats submerges himself in the Barcelona of the Eighties at the hand of Los Rebeldes, one of the most emblematic bands of those years, to the peripheries of its line-up, back when it was a rockabilly trio. Years of social change and musical explosion in which the rock thing – not to mention punk – was a real anomaly. Being drafted could tear your life apart or from one day to the next you could wind up supporting The Ramones. And all this in a grey, broke city, unpredictable and feral, in which the habitual do it your own way was not a slogan brandished by the latest brand, but the only way to get things done.

Encounter with Carles Prats and the original Los Rebeldes line up, Carlos Segarra, Aurelio Morata and Moisés "Moi" Sorolla, and screening of parts of the film.

20:00h. Opening doors

20:30h. Screening: Marglytta. A Music Documentary Based on Litoral

Sergi A. Minguell - Spain – 2012 – 73'

"What we sing is true". A Catalan happy-folk group tours the world (Iceland, England, France), celebrating with its joy-filled jams. A group of friends, of paella and barbecue that goes a long way. There's conflict, but not a lot; the rest: good times and visual beauty.

22:00h  Litoral Live

Litoral is made up of musicians with different backgrounds and different origins, who, as one of their songs says, draw an electrocardiogram on the map. Living up to their name, their musical style drinks from the fountain of Mediterranean rhythms and instrumentation: box drum, violin, accordion, Spanish guitar: all serving up pop melodies with Frenchified, Arabic, African, and Brazilian influences. Their two secret weapons: closeness to the audience and naturalness.

In a moment of severe social reorganization – better known as crisis – it seems appropriate to ask ourselves questions that we tiptoed around until recently: music as consolidation of cultural consumption: the role of youth subcultures, their class origins and their relationship with the market, hipsterism and the reasons behind indie sentiment, or the distrust awakened by musicians, ever more resilient to authority. Of all of them, we talk today with Ramón Faura (Le Petit Ramon, Macho) and the journalist Víctor Lenore (Diagonal, Rockdelux), in a session moderated by Nando Cruz, with live music by Joan Colomo.

Chat with Víctor Lenore and Ramon Faura. Moderator: Nando Cruz. With the participation of Joan Colomo, who will play live.

As a recent tradicion, every Halloween night we offer 3 great concert-films as an all-night marathon. Here it's our 2012 offer:

24:00

The Doors: Live at the Hollywood Bowl

Ray Manzarek - United States – 2012 – 71'

1968, the band's peak, paints this extraordinary demonstration of rock'n'roll like one of the fine arts. An hour of the most transcendent live sound every played. "The End" and "Light My Fire", among fourteen other smashers (some unreleased).

01:30h

Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live In Budapest '86

János Zsombolyai - Canada, Hungary, United States – 2012 – 92'

Ok, so maybe Queen didn't invent stadium cock-rcok, but as you can see here they did it large. Very effin' large. 1986, 80,000 Hungarian fans, pyrotechnics a go-go, Freddie Mercury and rock riffs that would stop a train dead in its tracks. Saturday night fever.

03:30h

The Chemical Brothers: Don't Think

Adam Smith - Japan, United Kingdom – 2012 – 90'

Don't Think charters the duo's 2011 concert for 50.000 fans at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. Armies of toy robots, psychotic clowns, strobe-tastic lighting and a million and a half psychedelic beats. Nobody's getting out of here alive.
