Mr. Jimmy

Director Peter Michael Dowd
Japan, United States / 113 min. / 2019 / Japanese, English

How a Japanese guitarist has dedicated more than three decades of his life to emulating – down to the minutest of musical and aesthetic details – his hero: Jimmy Page. The portrait of an obsession taken to unsuspected limits.

At aged 19, on his day off as a kimono seller, Akio Sakurai watched the 1973 Led Zeppelin concert movie at Madison Square Garden. Stunned and confused, at that very moment, he decided to "be" Jimmy Page. Since then, he has been recreating the original concerts of the legendary British hard rock band in small nightclubs around Japan. Point by point: chords, solo, poses, hairstyles, outfit ... the whole shebang! In this film, the camera respectfully and clinically scrutinizes the man capable of devoting all his time and energy to such an enormous, and apparently inconsequential task. He also approaches his allies: his wife, his dressmaker and the amp and guitar technicians who understand and respect a perfectionist’s obsession that they consider to be "genuinely Japanese." But will Mr. Jimmy find an audience that truly appreciates his merits? Is there a singer, bass player and drummer in the world who wants or can even live up to his extreme commitment? Is the absolutely faithful tracing of an alien artistic expression a “question without an answer”, a self-imposed hell, or a work of art in of itself?
