A panegyric. Rowland S. Howard was the gothic aristocrat of The Birthday Party, “elegant and spoilt”. A portrait (of Dorian Gray), which idealizes and humanizes him through his vision, heart, addiction, glory and genius. Nick Cave, Lydia Lunch and Thurston Moore celebrate the sinister prince.

A panegyric of the prince of the shadows. Rowland S. Howard was the gothic aristocrat of The Birthday Party, Dracula of Melbourne, after-punk dandy, "elegant and spoilt", who never sold his dreams and helped propel the band's sound with his sonic reverb sculptures and dark premonitions. Autoluminiscent doesn't skimp on details: original footage, interviews with all his contemporaries (Nick Cave, Thurston Moore, Lydia Lunch, all the members of the Birthday Party, all his girlfriends...) and atmospheric landscapes with music by JP Shilo (and readings from one of Howard's unpublished manuscripts), shape the mysterious life of the Australian guitarist. The portrait (of Dorian Gray) idealizes and humanizes him: his pretentiousness, vision ("He had it all clear, what he loved and hated", affirms Cave), foolhardy heart ("he was tragically romantic"), romances, eternal addiction, desire for future glory and precocious genius; bit it also delves into details, such as his pathological phobia of bananas. His life is both that of Boys Next Door and The Birthday Party – all the misadventures in London and Berlin and the antitheses – plus his marriage, later bands, illness and dignified death (he was Baudelairean and lordly till his final breath). An immortal specter.
