We Like It Like That. The Story of Latin Boogaloo

Director Mathew Ramirez Warren
United States / 78 min. / 2014 / English

More than a fad or a prelude to salsa, boogaloo was the BIG urban, cool, Hispanic sound, of '60s New York Young and fresh, but anchored in tradition; the boogaloo gave a community its identity. This is the film about its birth, crowning and crucifixion, with all the apostles: from Richie Ray and Joe Bataan to Johnny Colon and Pete Rodríguez.

Many saw it as a fad, or a precursor to salsa (more serious, more deeply-rooted), but boogaloo was the BIG, urban, cool, Hispanic sound, of '60s New York. Young and fresh, but anchored in tradition; boogaloo gave a community its identity. This is the film about its birth, crowning and crucifixion, where all the apostles attest. The magnetism, as you'll see, was its pubescent cheek: Harvey Averne insists that when your parents tell you to "Turn that shit off" you know you've found your music. And this music was the rhythm of the Latin kids that loved Motown and R&B. Its rise was meteoric, and the film gathers the first iconic hits ("Bang Bang" and "I Like It Like That"), the explosion (everyone hitched a ride with the new sound), the reticence of old-school mambo, the racism, the innovators, those that got the dough, exhaustion, disillusionment and the final victory of salsa. Who goes there? Pucho and Bataan, Johnny Colon and Larry Harlow, Ricardo Ray and Joey Pastrana. It's boogaloo, amigo.
