Strike a Pose

Things got ugly when Madonna brought one of her dancers from the 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, out of the closet. This colossal film reveals the lives of those six dancing Apollos, or how one survived being La Ciccone’s dancing partner. Homophobia, truth or myth, gay liberation, illness, oblivion. But also redemption, healing and family.

Madonna screwed the pooch by dragging one of the dancers of her 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour out of the closet (without asking him beforehand), in the controversial documentary Truth Or Dare. This lavish film reveals the inner lives of those seven Apollonian dancers (Salim, Carlton, Oliver, Kevin, Gabriel, Louis and Jose) or how one survived being La Ciccone’s dance partner. We witness the selection, ascension and entire lives of the seven in her “fishbowl”, when everyone loved each other and Madonna, adoptive mother, kept them united in her bosom and the world was at their feet, and they were all gorgeous and glamorous. But Strike A Pose plunges into the abyss: the backstage “secret” of the tour (HIV, drugs, fear), the decadence, the very-ill-advised rows with the big boss lady, the somewhat pathetic post-Madonna LPs. From there to the deepest pit: addiction, homelessness, illness and death. Dark times. Strike A Pose touches dozens of keys, with taste and elegance, while shunning cheap shock tactics: homophobia, truths and myths, gay liberation, sickness, oblivion, talent and stardom. But also redemption, healing, friendship and family.
