Raving Iran

Director Susanne Regina Meures

The Kafkaesque deed of making house music in Islamic Iran. Amoosh and Arash embark on their fateful voyage amid insane scenes that are straight out of Orwell (“Are you laughing at our beards?” bribery, threats and fear. When the Swiss Street Parade festival invites them to play, euphoria turns to uncertainty. A door: “Do we go in?”

“I’m scared; last time the police almost beat me to death.” “I don’t want to travel hundreds of miles to end up in jail again…” Phrases we never hear on the eve of a European rave.” But it’s different there. Raving Iran documents the Kafkaesque feat that is making house music in Islamic Iran. In that world, secrecy is the first step: you need a partner if you’re gonna dance. Raving Iran tells the story with courage, but also with great, great caution (part of the footage is shot on cell pones for safety reasons). Amoosh and Arash (artistic names: Blade & Beard) are the stars of this hazardous odyssey, and retrace their ominous journey amid bribery, threats, fear, prison and a degree of father-son misunderstanding. Of course, there’s a hearty helping of gobsmacking scenes of bureaucratic-totalitarian madness, 1984-style (their unforgettable visit to the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance to ask for permits, a fragment that would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic: “Beard? Are you laughing at our beards?” When the Swiss Street Parade festival invites them to play, euphoria turns to uncertainty. A door: “Do we go in?”
