Blur: New World Towers

Director Sam Wrench
United Kingdom / 93 min. / 2015 / English

This isn’t the story of Blur, but it is a story of Blur. With impeccable shots and a vast array of resources, Sam Wrench gets the band’s complete complicity to charter the recording of the unexpected album The Magic Whip. In five days. When Blur barely existed. The magic unfolds, but not the dirty laundry. Neat and elegant.

This ain’t the story of the Blur, but it is a story of Blur. With impeccable shots and a vast array of media, Sam Wrench gets the band’s complete complicity to charter the recording of the unexpected comeback album The Magic Whip. In five days. In Asia. When Blur barely still existed and its members placed ads in the classifieds. “We could have spent those five days being tourists”, admits Dave Rowntree, but finally, curiosity and work ethic get the better of them. All hands on deck! The film unravels the magic, the technique, the sound, the bare bones of the reunion in the recording studio and how the previous non-nostalgic reunion in 2009 had panned out (which, of course, had its definitive non-nostalgic climax when the group decided to record new material). But it doesn’t touch the dirty laundry or the rifts, which are merely sensed almost in an abstract way (“relationships create fear, and people do weird things in them”, claims Alex James). Neat and elegant. Neon credits and award-winning production. A moment in time, captured with great prowess.
