Ethiopiques: Revolt of the Soul

Director Maciej Bochniak
Germany, Poland / 70 min. / 2017 / English

A tribute to the brilliant generation of Ethiopian musicians that shaped their own fusion of rock, soul and funk at the end of the 60’s, to the grocer-producer who made it possible and to the French collector who made them a worldwide phenomenon.

This is the story of a daring music aficionado who released the first
records by local Ethiopian groups, circumventing the restrictions of Emperor Haile Selassie's regime, and even managing to take some of them (The Walias Band) on tour in the United States. And how, after decades of exile and repression at the hands of the subsequent Derg communist military junta, a passionate collector and French journalist insisted on rescuing them from oblivion and making the glorious Ethiopian musical history known to the whole world. And so, the successful series of Éthiopiques albums was born, and would change the lives of (those here present) Elvis Costello and Brendan Canty (Fugazi), among many others.
