Here to be Heard: The Story of The Slits

Director William E. Badgley
United Kingdom / 86 min. / 2017 / English

A meticulous chronicle of the career of legendary pioneers, The Slits. Girls who waged a dual battle: feminism and punk, a genre that they transcended with Jamaican spice and unsurpassable creativity.

The ladies themselves carefully whip out the photo albums and pre
ss clippings and give a first person account of how they fought tooth and nail to keep doing things their way and how they spat in the face of a patriarchal and God-fearing society. And how they rapidly shook off the three-chord punk corset to explore reggae, dub and African rhythms. Despite not triumphing commercially, the Slits undoubtedly paved the way to later movements and it becomes crystal clear here why they’re considered to be the original riot grrrls.
