Milford Graves Full Mantis

Director Jake Meginsky, Neil Young
United States / 91 min. / 2018 / English

The kaleidoscopic creativity of Milford Graves, one of the most audacious percussionists on the planet, translated into images: biology, martial arts, heartbeats and sweeping free jazz.

Two disciples of the drummer and rhythm theorist Milford Graves unconventionally undertake the task of explaining the master's pataphysical world. No chronological order or talking heads spouting flattery here. We find fascinating sequences and dissertations about the subjects into which one of the most radical free jazz proponents of the ‘60s poured his thirst for knowledge throughout his lifetime. The geometry of the plants becomes a sort of mystical gardening, the vibrations of the heart become music with scientific rigor, the movements of the praying mantis and the dances of West Africa inspire him to create his own martial art (the "yara"). The search, in short, for how to connect the sound of the drums with the deepest vaults of the mind. And his performance for a Japanese school of autistic children is simply unforgettable.
