The tribute that the most popular samba school: Mangueira, dedicated to singer-songwriter Maria Bethânia at the Rio carnival, reveals the spiritual dimension of the Bahia diva.

In 2016, the world-famous samba school Mangueira won the grand prize at the Rio Carnival with a parade in honour of Maria Bethânia, the great diva of Bahia and sister of Caetano Veloso, with a 50-year career under her belt. For the parade, it chose to focus on the great spiritual devotion of Bethânia, a syncretism that mixes Catholicism, candomblé and the mythology inherited from the aborigines. This colour and passion filled documentary n follows the entire process of creating the carnival, from the initial designs and rehearsals to the production of costumes and floats. It also travels to Santo Amaro, the artist's hometown, to immerse us in her peculiar religious universe and the cultural amalgam of a region that received the most African slaves from all over the country. A century ago, people who went from Bahia to Rio were persecuted by the police for their music and beliefs. Here, however, we see how a singer from Bahia emerges victorious for precisely the same reasons.
