Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda

Director Stephen Nomura Schible
Japan, United States / 100 min. / 2017 / English, Japanese

When life seems to be ending, the memory needs to explain itself before bidding farewell. This is what this Japanese composer and pianist does through an introspective look at his career and his obsession to connect music with nature while facing a serious illness and rescuing a piano from the Fukushima catastrophe.

At the critical moment of a throat cancer diagnosis, Sakamoto halts his career and shares with the camera, reflections on his artistic life and his social concerns. His is a constant search for the connection between music and nature, as we see in his sound explorations in Kenya and the Arctic. He also rethinks his relationship with film: as we see him at home, working on a piece inspired by Tarkovsky's use of Bach's choirs, he also reminds us of how he wound up creating classic soundtracks for films in which he only intended to act: Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, by Nagisa Oshima, and The Last Emperor, by Bertolucci. With strategically arranged footage, this elegant and parsimonious film travels from his beginnings with the Yellow Magic Orchestra in the effervescent Tokyo of the ‘70s, to the music he composed in response to 9/11 and the war in Iraq. His anti-war and anti-nuclear convictions also flourish before a piano that survived the Fukushima catastrophe. The result is the portrait of an artist who continues to thrive on child-like discovery of each sound, a poetic reflection of the creative act and above all, a hymn to life.
