Blue Note Records: Beyond The Notes

Director Sophie Huber
Switzerland, United States / 85 min. / 2018 / English

The monumental history of the most important independent jazz label in history. Or, how two German Jews made a second home for a pool of artists that would forever revolutionize the genre and music in general.

The drummer Kendrick Scott, member of the most recent batch of musicians of the Blue Note team, affirms that he tries not to think too much about the giants that preceded him because it would be "too intimidating". With good reason: for the label founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, two German Jews who landed in New York, to shake off Nazism, has featured artists like Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins. Also, the survivors, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, who, in current interviews, emphasize the freedom and the unparalleled respect that the label gave to artists and how crucial their message of pride and hope was for the African-American community. The film skilfully handles the label’s vast vaults; not just the music, but also the

photographs of Francis Wolff and the hundreds of covers that Reid

Miler signed, leaving between them an indelible mark on the design of the 20th century. A monument to a jazz institution the that was eternally characterized by its good eye for musicians who would end up turning the musical scene upside down, and that represented a beacon of fraternity and enthusiasm which, as several interviewees point out, is still valid "in these times of democratic regression."
