Apolo. La juventud baila

Director Marc Crehuet
Spain / 49 min. / 2018 / Español

The 75th anniversary of the Apolo Club inspires this sardonic docu-fiction, on the pretext of explaining a story that swings from amusement park to orchestral hall, electronic temple and so much more, and proudly takes a pop at the generation that’s pushing forty and refuses to age gracefully.

Don’t hold your breath for a chronological tale with talking heads. This is a rogue, hilarious tribute to what the Apolo club represents for Barcelona nightlife, that takes the opportunity to humorously reflect on the moment when one feels too old to go to clubs or, on the contrary, still behaves like a teenager. It reveals Apolo’s past as an amusement park in the 1930s, as an orchestral dancehall to melt the mambo rhythm of the bourgeoisie from 1946, the installation of the Nitsa Club and in the mid ‘90s... indie concerts in which countless couples hooked up, such as the star in this satire. With the complicity of folks like writer and director Carlo Padial, journalists such as Oscar Broc, Javier Blánquez and Pere Vall, DJ Coco, comedy duo Venga Monjas and the director of Primavera Sound, Alberto Guijarro, the film laughs (lovingly) at everything and everyone: from the red lit swinger club vibe to the outmoded mods or the dummy-sucking 90's Indie fans; from the miseries of the audiovisual sector to the arrogance attributed to the Barcelona cultural scene, winding around to the confusing and hilarious current debate about Trap. Of course, it is clear that everyone has his or her own story to tell of Apollo, an undeniable musical and revelling icon of the city.
