Murder in the Front Row

Director Adam Dubin
United States / 92 min. / 2019 / English

Detailed chronicle of the San Francisco thrash scene in the ‘80s, which propelled classics of the genre like Exodus, Metallica, Testament, Slayer and Death Angel. The furious, lower-class and anti-glamorous flip-side of the Mötley Crüe biopic.

Adam Dubin, known for directing several documentaries on Metallica and iconic video clips of the Beastie Boys (“Fight for Your Right to Party” and “No Sleep 'til Brooklyn”), begins with the photo-journal Murder in the front row, edited some years ago by Harald Oimoen and Brian Lew to tell the story of the thrash metal scene in the San Francisco Bay area. Comradery, passion, aggression, DIY activism ... this is the story of how a small community of teenage fans of English groups like Judas Priest, UFO, Iron Maiden, Venom and Motorhead created their own scene, with their own angry and spirited sound, and their own fanzines, relating through the exchange of cassette tapes and having fun by attacking “posers” with Mötley Crüe t-shirts. Through extensive graphic material, a juicy anecdote, and interviews with members of Exodus, Testament, Possessed, Vio-Lence and Death Angel, we get up closes and personal with the scene where bands that found their second home have much to tell, including Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth (who, in no way, could fit in with the glam that reigned at the time in LA and in the mainstream circuit). Between them, they spread the fever for cutting guitars and fast drums, from the West Coast of the United States to the whole world.
