PJ Harvey: A Dog Called Money

Director Seamus Murphy
Ireland, United Kingdom / 90 min. / 2019 / English

Visual testimony of the creative process of the PJ Harvey album The Hope Six Demolition Project (2016). From Afghanistan, Kosovo and the ghettos of Washington DC to the Saturday in London in which the public witnessed its recording.

Just as attendees at that “installation” on the ground floor of the Somerset House art centre were able to see, live and behind a one-sided viewing window, how Polly Jean Harvey directed the recording of her eleventh album, here we discover the genesis of the project at the hand of the artist herself and Seamus Murphy, a photojournalist with whom she had already worked on the twelve short films that accompanied the release of the album Let England Shake. Halfway between journalistic report and the ‘making of’ the album, Harvey visits areas crippled by violence, social inequality and / or war. The English singer-songwriter represents a kind of war song correspondent who keeps a travel diary in the form of a voiceover. The film does not propose solutions or offer a deep political analysis, but captures images and stories that she was finding. Like a housekeeper who takes care of a single town in Kosovo alone or the children of the Anacostia neighbourhood in Washington DC, who dream of cars and money from some of the poorest streets in the United States, a few minutes from the epicenter of Western power. And, in parallel, we see how those stories materialized into poems and, later, in a glazed room, into songs.
