Wim Wenders produces this tribute to the modern jazz label and the passion of its founders, two Berlin friends who landed in New York fleeing Nazism and changed the history of music.

This is the adventure of Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, two young Jewish jazz lovers and childhood friends from Berlin who settled in the Big Apple in the 1930s – a city they considered the mecca of their favourite music. They found themselves entrenched in a deeply racist society that denigrated black musicians and decided to fight to dignify them by creating – with the financial help of Max Margulis, a writer and music teacher of communist affiliation – a modern label that projected the language of jazz into the future. That modest label would end up becoming the most important record label in the history of modern jazz, home to artists such as Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, the Jazz Messengers of Art Blakey, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. This visually delectable documentary interviews great survivors of that golden age like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and the owner of the Village Vanguard club, Lorraine Gordon, and illustrates that for which there are no images, with animation that brings emotional depth to a great story of friendship, passion and social awareness.
