El viaje de Iacanga

The history of political activism of the Águas Claras Festival, the “Brazilian Woodstock”, which started in the mid-70s during the military dictatorship and managed in four editions to bring together artists such as Gilberto Gil, Raul Seixas and João Gilberto.

It was 1975 when Antônio Checchin Jr. (aka “Leivinha”), a young engineering student, decided to organize a music festival at his parents' farm, located in Iacanga (São Paulo). Before the attentive and bewildered gaze of the military dictatorship, implanted after the military coup of 1964 and supported by the United States government, the event became a true "oasis of freedom". With musicians like Os Mutantes, Som Nosso de Cada Dia and Jorge Mautner, the event brought together thousands of hippies and leftist dissidents from all over the country. After a six-year hiatus, the Água Claras Festival resumed its activities and in three more editions brought together the best of Brazilian music: Gilberto Gil, Hermeto Pascoal, Luiz Gonzaga, Sandra de Sá, Raul Seixas, Alceu Valença and João Gilberto, among many others. In this complete chronicle that won the award for Best National Documentary in In-Edit Brazil 2019, producers, artists, Leivinha himself, and his family and friends, tell us the beautiful and daring history of cultural and political activism that created the most legendary outdoor music festival of Brazilian history. All this is covered by colourful historic archive images of the festival that contrast with the darkness of the propaganda of the military regime it challenged.
