The Men's Room

Director Petter Sommer, Jo Vemund Svendsen
Norway / 75 min. / 2018 / Norwegian

The exciting day-to-day life of a choir of Norwegian men who while rehearsing for their life's concert, opening Black Sabbath, are impacted by the knowledge that their driver is dying of cancer.

He who sings his evils frightens. That's what the 25 members of this film's lead choir firmly believe. Every week they get together to drink and sing together about the miseries of middle age: loneliness, prostate problems, hating your family a little, drinking too much.... They take it so seriously that they have even taken the oath that they will sing at the funeral of the first of them to die. And then, just as they're rehearsing for the big day, a Black Sabbath opening performance, their driver tells them he has terminal cancer. He doesn't know how much time he has left to live, but he plans to "die with his boots on". What begins as a thuggery and self-parody group therapy then leads to a study of friendship relationships and the strength of the group to move forward. Honest, close, narrated with a good pulse and touches of humour, the documentary shows us how a pineapple of Nordic men between the ages of 45 and 60, reserved and little given to express their emotions, faces the fatality of the death of one of their own. What they talk about, what they don't talk about and how they do it. The Men's Room leaves a trail of beauty and fragility but hits hard.
