Suede: The Insatiable Ones

Director Mike Christie
United Kingdom / 113 min. / 2018 / English

Suede’s rise, fall and comeback. The definitive story of one of the flagships of British pop of the ‘90s told with enormous openness and great detail by its own members.

Suede looks back with the perspective of the passing of the years and wants to show us everything (except for Bernard Butler, the only absent voice). The chronicle starts from their move to London and the publication of a “guitarist wanted” ad, which listed influences such as Smiths, Bowie and Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. And it continues with the turning point, when they were acclaimed by the music press as the new best English group before even releasing a single. They also reflect on how and why their decadent, melodic and romantic sound connected with so many young people from the suburbs. The volatile and thorny personal relationship of the duo formed by guitarist Bernard Butler and singer Brett Anderson is addressed; we witness the acoustic rehearsal in which they created "Beautiful Ones" ("This is not a single," said the producer); the glory days of Brit Pop are remembered, when they competed with Oasis, Blur and Pulp and lest we forget: the knackeredness and self-destructive instincts after endless tours and binges, as well as the addictions that emerged along the way and that they themselves now put down to absurd rock mythology. Nothing remains in the inkwell in a documentary loaded with excellent archival and home-shot footage that also reveals the group today, with testimonies as surprising as that of Justine Frischmann of Elastica, a key element in the early days of the band, and the comic Ricky Gervais, who served as fleeting manager of the group.
