Suzi Q

Portrait of the legendary and incombustible Suzi Quatro, bassist, singer, actress and poet of Detroit who, from the London of the glam era, contributed to redefining the role of women in r'n'r and inspiring a whole generation of female artists.

If an idea is repeated throughout this documentary it is astonishment at the fact that so much ambition, strength and talent can fit into such a petite body. Embedded in her iconic leather suit and with a bass that weighed as much as she did, Suzi Quatro established the figure of the frontwoman as just as “tough” as her male companions and commanded the group of which she was a singer and instrumentalist. Off the back of hits like "Can the Can" or "Devil Gate Drive", not only did she stand out in the glam wave of the ‘70s but she also inspired an entire generation of rockers who followed in his footsteps. The glossy list of testimonies – Joan Jett (her spiritual daughter), Cherie Currie and Lita Ford (former bandmates with Jett in The Runaways), Debbie Harry (Blondie), Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) and Donita Sparks (L7), in addition to Alice Cooper and members of Slade and Sweet – praise her pioneer status in unison. The film revisits her roots in Detroit, within a family as musical as they are Catholic, and her  first musical steps with The Pleasure Seekers / Cradle with her sisters, who never accepted that she "abandoned" them to try her luck alone in the English market. Splattered with her poems, the film is also a first-person self-portrait that reflects on fame, ambition and resilience. All this without neglecting the many facets (actress, writer and author of musicals) of a woman who at six years old saw Elvis and knew what she would do the rest of her days. And the rest is history.
