The ultimate film about tropicalism, centred in its core players (Caetano, Gil, Os Mutantes, Tom Ze...), but also in unexplored sources like TV, theatre and fashion. A visual feast of strange archive footage, pop collages and dazzling declarations.

Others films have been here before, but this is the ultimate documentary about the Brazilian tropicalist movement. Tropicália's use of tropical images is one of its finest features: the film is as colourful and liberating as the phenomenon it relates. Naturally, ex-members and cohorts call the shots here (the classics: Caetano, Gil, Os Mutantes, Tom Zé, joined by lesser-known figures like Oswald de Andrade, Olauber Rocha, and Rogerio Duprat), but what steals hearts and minds are the unexplored sources and the new theories. Tropicália unearths the fundamental role of TV, theatre and fashion within the movement, and from there unleashes a visual geyser of strange archive footage (Portuguese and French TV; Gil and Caetano's exile to London), pop collages, and gleaming declarations. It discloses the tender innocence of its protagonists ("We didn't know how tough things really were") when it was time to face a dictator, their youthful ideals, and the commercial, almost rose-tinted element (Veloso's wedding, for example). By 1969, tropicalism had lost its thunder, but this documentary brings it back to life. Divine and delightful.
