Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap

Director Ice-T , Andy Baybutt
United Kingdom, United States / 112 min. / 2012 / English

“Lyrics are everything”. This ain’t about cars or jewellery; it’s about the craft of rhyme. Ice-T debuts with a fresh perspective: delving into the minds of the artisans of rap to examine their interior worlds.  All the rappers take part in the search. The results are revelations.

If you think you've seen it all in hip-hop documentaries, you're wrong. Here's a fresh perspective: a film that focuses exclusively on the art of rhyme, the attributes of the MC. How come nobody thought of this before? After all, rap is the epicentre of hip-hop culture. Ice-T has gone hook, line and sinker with his directing debut. The Californian rapper travels round the United States looking for explanations and the origins of this discipline, interviewing American rappers who are happy to put in their two cents. You'll find the roots and the heart of an art that would change the world. Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap gets inside the heads of the creators of rap, who tell us how "Hip-hop didn't invent anything. Hip-hop reinvented everything". The voices, some of which we hear unaccompanied for the first time, tell the whole story. KRS-One cranks out a freestylin', Snoop Dogg and Ice-T improvise a duet; Q-Tip speculates on the substance of his voice, Ice Cube reflects on the moral parable. This ain't about cars or gems; it's about the art of rhyme. All will be revealed.
