Last Days Here

Spinal Tap made us laugh and Anvil was bittersweet, but the last laugh stops here. Front man of the heavies, Pentagram, Bobby Liebling agonizes in his parents’ basement, wasted on crack. The drama of his downfall, so exaggerated it seems fictitious, turns into a hymn of resurrection

Anvil was brilliant, but some scenes bordered on the grotesque. The laughs, in any case, stop in Last Days Here. Bobby Liebling was the charismatic singer of 70’s hard-rockers and doom pioneers, Pentagram. Today, he agonizes in his parents’ basement, hooked on crack and heroine, a shocking zombie plagued by skin infections, toothless and listless, flirting daily with death. The film starts with the reunion between Liebling and Sean “Pellet” Pelletier, the friend who will try to launch the ill-fated metal legend’s career. Last Days Here alternates the drama of his downfall, so exaggerated it appears fictitious, so full of blunders it seems to have been written by a doomsday scriptwriter (they blow an audience with KISS, Liebling walks out in the middle of another meeting with Columbia), with the improbable hymn of resurrection that rings out in his present life. Will Liebling be capable of getting up and walking, relaunching his career, staying off drugs and even finding love? It sounds unlikely but you’ll find the answer here: in an unforgettable film brimming with empathy and warmth, that is also an essay on bad luck and – again – self-destruction.
