Fruit of the collaboration between Jem Cohen and Fugazi, this film covers the last ten years of the purest and most intense band to come out of Washington DC. Veering away from the traditional format, it offers an untainted portrait of the musicians at work: performing.

Everything is terrible tense. Fruit of the collaboration between Jem Cohen and Fugazi, this documentary covers the last ten years of the purest band to come out of Washington DC. Far from the traditional format, launch #80 by Dischord Records is a portrait of the musicians at work: performing. Jem Cohen, punk filmmaker and lifelong friend of Ian McKaye, makes an honest, sincere film, without tricks or trifles. He combines Super 8, 16 mm and video (shot during the Red Medicine tour in 1995), to x-ray Fugazi: its politics, without doubt, but also its tedious moments, its humour (assumed to be non-existent in the case of McKaye), its fraternal relationship with the fans, its refusal to get stuck in the rigid rituals of hardcore. And, above all, its sound: electrifying, perpetually vertical, tense and frowning like nothing else, ripped and nervous, like Guy Picciotto’s movements. But Jem Cohen’s objectives (for the film and its subject) are also a tribute to the true punk aesthetic: self-management, rejection of business and doing things for love. So that it means something and changes lives. Instrument and Fugazi achieve just that.
